Chongyang Festival for the Elderly

Today is the 9th Chung Yeung Festival in September of the lunar calendar. The Chung Yeung Festival has a history of more than 2,000 years. In the Three Kingdoms period, there was a record of the "Chung Yeung Festival." From the Wei and Jin period, the Chung Yeung Festival had the custom of admiring chrysanthemums and drinking wine. The Chung Yeung Festival was officially designated as a festival in the Tang Dynasty. Various celebration activities were held, including viewing flowers, eating cakes and drinking chrysanthemum wine. These customs continued to the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Since the 1980s, in order to promote respect for the elderly, respect for the elderly, love the elderly, and help the elderly, some places in China have designated September 9th as "the Old Man's Day." In 1989, the Chinese government designated the day of September of the Lunar New Year as "the Old Man Day." The newly revised Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly clearly stipulates that the “Lunar New Year Day” in the 9th lunar month of the lunar calendar each year fully reflects the concern of the state and the government for the elderly. Dietary nutrition is the foundation of health. At the onset of Chung Yeung Festival, we talk about dietary nutrition that the elderly should pay attention to.

Food variety, thickness match

The functions of the digestive system of the elderly have declined, the chewing ability has been weakened, the secretion of digestive juices and gastrointestinal motility have decreased, and constipation is prone to occur. Some elderly people are at increased risk of hypertension, dyslipidemia, heart disease, and diabetes. Therefore, the elderly diet should follow the principle of “balanced nutrition, promote health, and prevent disease”. The choice of food should be varied, thick and fine, soft and easy to digest and absorb. Coarse grains are rich in B vitamins, dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, and phytochemicals. Often eat coarse grains, fruits and vegetables, can ensure the intake of dietary fiber, prevent constipation, prevent diseases.

Reasonable arrangement, happy meal

Family and society should ensure the quality of eating, eating environment and eating mood of the elderly in all aspects. Not only do we have to obtain a wide range of foods with different tastes and flavors, and ensure adequate intake of various nutrients, we should also create a relaxed and happy dining environment. Keep old people healthy eating attitude and enjoyable meal process to promote the physical and mental health of the elderly and improve the quality of life.

Prevent malnutrition and anemia

Changes in physical, psychological, and socioeconomic conditions, such as reduced teeth, oral problems, and poor mood, can lead to loss of appetite and reduced food intake. Older people are prone to nutritional deficiencies such as malnutrition or anemia. In malnutrition, the body's resistance to disease declines. Therefore, the elderly should pay attention to preventing malnutrition and anemia. Older people are not leaner and healthier and should maintain a healthy weight. Eat iron-rich foods such as liver and blood tofu.

Exercise regularly to prevent sports injuries

Elderly people who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of high blood pressure, high blood lipids, and diabetes and other diseases. They should do more outdoor activities, receive exposure to sunlight, be beneficial to vitamin D synthesis in the body, and prevent or delay the occurrence of osteoporosis. When carrying out activities, we must do our best to protect our joints and prevent sports injuries.
