Advantages and Disadvantages of Ozone Generator Disinfection

The ozone generator is a device for producing ozone gas. Ozone is easy to decompose and cannot be stored. It needs to be used on-site (on a short-term storage in special cases), so ozone generators should be used in all places where ozone can be used. Ozone generators are widely used in drinking water, sewage, industrial oxidation, food processing and preservation, pharmaceutical synthesis, and space sterilization. The ozone gas generated by the ozone generator can be directly used, or it can be mixed by a mixing device and a liquid to participate in the reaction.

It is widely used in ozone generators, but it is expensive to manufacture. Divided by ozone generator structure, there are gap discharge type (DBD) and open type. The structure of the gap discharge type is that ozone generates ozone in the gap between the inner and outer electrode sections, and the ozone can be collected and used in a concentrated manner, such as for water treatment. The electrodes of the open generator are exposed to the air, and the generated ozone diffuses directly into the air. Because of the low ozone concentration, it is usually used for air sterilization in a small space or surface disinfection of some small items. A gap discharge generator can be used instead of an open generator. However, the gap discharge type ozone generator costs much higher than the open type.

The advantages of ozone generator disinfection are as follows:

(1) As an excellent oxidizing agent and bactericide, ozone has a fast sterilizing effect, high efficiency, low concentration required, and can kill viruses and spores which are highly resistant to chlorine.

(2) Its disinfection effect is less affected by pH, water temperature and interfering substances.

(3) It can simultaneously achieve various functions such as disinfection, decolorization, deodorization, oxidation and destruction of pollutants in water, increase of dissolved oxygen in water, and effectively improve the quality of effluent.

(4) No by-products such as tri-methane are produced, and there is no problem that residual causes secondary pollution.

The main disadvantages of ozone disinfection are as follows:

(1) Equipment investment and operating costs are high, and management and maintenance levels are required to be high.

(2) Ozone does not have a long-lasting bactericidal effect.

(3) The ozone generator and the dosing device are complicated. After disinfection, a small amount of disinfectant should be added to maintain the amount of residual chlorine required in the water.
