For most people, medical means going to a doctor or going to the hospital, but the two Australian medical school graduates are working hard to change the status quo, they have to turn their home into a clinic.

These two people are the founders of Melbourne medical technology startup CliniCloud . CliniCloud 's first product is a medical kit that includes the world's first home-based networked digital stethoscope, contactless thermometer and mobile app.

The kit allows doctors to view the patient's temperature, heartbeat and breathing patterns online and learn more about the patient's condition. In addition, patients can also consult a doctor online.

CliniClou has established a partnership with the American telemedicine company Doctor On Demand . Using data collected and shared by CliniCloud , Doctor on Demand will soon begin offering 15- minute video consultations.

“Our goal is to bring healthcare to your home. Part of this mission is to make the family a clinic, which is where our products are used,” Andrew explains.

“We believe that the global healthcare system has great potential for transferring services to the home, implementing remote consultations and accepting available treatments at home.”

“Basically, we have to create a new medical model that is low-cost, convenient, and has a good patient experience. This is the ultimate goal of CliniCloud .”

“We have plans to expand the range of instruments in the kit – adding instruments that measure blood pressure, pulse and blood sugar.”

Andrew said that what he and Zhuang Hongwen have achieved so far is only the first step of the Long March.

They believe that the current medical model is not sustainable, given the current rate of spending growth, especially given the ageing population.

"The key to reducing medical costs is to first reduce the need for patients to go to clinics and hospitals. This is our entry point," Andrew said.

We started from three aspects, of which the role of technology is indispensable:

First, giving people the tools they can use every day to turn their families into clinics.

Second, software is provided to connect consumers and their data to medical experts who provide treatment.

Third, use artificial intelligence to analyze the data, thereby reducing the amount of triage and diagnosis that doctors need to perform.

“Not everyone needs the attention and treatment of a dedicated health professional,” Andrew said. "The role of the doctor is really not a data processor, but rather a personal guide to help get healthy."

According to Andrew , CliniCloud's products can provide doctors with more information about patients and enable real-time tracking, thus enabling more personalized medical services.

Andrew said that while there are other companies in the world that are committed to achieving these three goals, CliniCloud is the only company that is committed to integrating these three goals into one device. He likens this to the Apple iPhone, which makes mobile phones, provides operating systems, and provides ancillary services (such as music and video sales).

Andrew said that he and Zhuang Hongwen's advantages in this respect can be described as unique. Both are doctors, and Andrew has experience in business management consulting. Zhuang Hongwen is a self-taught software engineer who masters multiple platforms.

“The whole process is extremely difficult. Our medical equipment involves both building hardware that was not available before and making complex software that requires the use of data science. We are in a highly regulated industry,” Andrew said.

They started planning for the establishment of CliniCloud in 2012, when Zhuang Hongwen was studying for the last year at the University of Melbourne Medical School, and Andrew graduated a year ago as a consultant at Bain Management Consulting.

They have won the $75,000 Imagine Cup prize, which provides students with funding and support to help transform student projects into social businesses or non-profit organizations that address specific social issues.

They spent a few years perfecting their ideas, understanding the position that is right for them in the medical field, then resigning and forming their own team, and since then they have devoted themselves to CliniCloud.

“When a doctor is one thing, but understanding how the health care system works, it is another matter to understand how the medical field needs to evolve to meet people's future needs by comparing the current needs and capabilities of the medical field,” Andrew said.

CliniCloud currently has 17 full-time employees, has established a partnership with Doctor On Demand, and has signed a contract with Best Buy, a consumer electronics chain retailer, to sell CliniCloud products in the US and Canada. To launch its own products in Europe, CliniCloud is completing the requirements of EU regulations. The company also hopes to eventually launch its own products in Australia and China.

In 2015, Tencent, China's largest Internet company, contacted Zhuang Hongwen and Andrew. Subsequently, Tencent and Ping An Innovation Investment Fund (insurance and banking group – China Ping An Investment Agency) provided US$5 million in seed funding.

Zhang Jiang, Managing Director of Ping An Innovation Investment Fund explained the reasons for the investment. “The combination of mobile Internet and healthcare can help to modernize many existing medical services, including the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases,” he said in a statement. “CliniCloud's products are medical-quality, easy to use, connect to the cloud and provide follow-up services – a perfect combination of the emerging mobile health market.”

Andrew expects one day the CliniCloud suite will be able to enter thousands of households. “In the future, it will become a must-have item in the home like a first aid kit,” he said.
