The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh is using 3D printing technology to create a new ear for the nine-year-old Anya Storie. Due to congenital microtia, Anya's right ear is always unable to fully develop, which has affected her hearing.
Thanks to the hospital's 3D scanning and printing resources, plastic surgeon Ken Stewart will create a new ear for Anya, another replica of Anya's ear, made of cartilage from her ribs, and surgically mounted in the brain Right. Surgery will restore Anya's right ear to normal hearing ability.
Like many children with disabilities, Anya has been brave enough to face constant bullying and unwarranted comments. "When people at school point me at me, I usually ignore them, but I am happy to get a new ear, which is so exciting, I can't wait," Anya said.
Before deciding what treatments are most beneficial to Anya, her parents decided to wait and see how the technology will develop. “Reconstructing the ear is a very difficult procedure,†her mother explained. “But thanks to the use of 3D scanners and printers, it seems to be the best time to do surgery.â€
An Artec 3D handheld scanner will capture the 3D image of Anya's left ear. According to Tiangong, an informative 3D scan of a left ear will gradually appear on the screen. The hospital technician then flips the scan to create a 3D image: the same as Anya's left ear, but will serve as a substitute for the right ear.
The data will then be sent to St. John's Hospital in Livingston, where a 3D printer will create a hard plastic model based on the scanned image. After disinfection, this 3D printed ear model will enter the operating room to provide guidance on how to engrave new ears with Anya's rib cartilage.
