    According to a report on the US Army Daily website on July 16, the Craig Biotechnology Laboratory has signed a contract with the Army to provide a film of material woven from "Dragon Silk". The lab says the material is almost as tough as Kevlar, but it's lighter and much more flexible.
Labs chief operating officer Rice said the technology has "subverted the industry."
Rice said: "This process has been fully clarified. For thousands of years, we have been harvesting silk. The tension and elasticity of the dragon silk is very strong, and it has become one of the most sturdy fibers known to man. It is an ideal material. There are many uses."

The contract involves the supply of approximately 15 square inches (about 97 square centimeters) of material for laboratory testing. The material supplied by the company in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is scheduled for delivery in April 2017. If the Army is fascinated by the test results, they can choose to sign a $1 million contract to test not only the material itself, but also its application to better meet the bulletproof needs. Rice said the company is looking forward to demonstrating the toughness of its patented dragon silk and its versatile properties.
The Army’s Project Executive Director’s Protection Division did not immediately respond to the reporter’s inquiry.
Rice said the current production cost of this material is less than $300 per kilogram. He said that this number may fall further if the production process itself is not very different from conventional silk. The average cost of silk is about 30 to 50 US dollars per kilogram. Rice's competitors trying to make protein filaments of similar quality face production costs close to $3,700 per kilogram.
He said that the company has been developing this material for about 10 years. Six years ago, silkworms produced "unconventional" proteins (filaments containing natural protein fibers) for the first time.
