Panasonic Health Care Holdings Announces Acquisition of Bayer Medical Devices

Japan's large medical device company Matsushita Health Care Holdings Co., Ltd. announced on June 10 that it will acquire the medical device business of Bayer, a large German pharmaceutical and chemical company. The acquisition target is the measuring equipment business of blood sugar value, and the acquisition amount is approximately 138 billion yen. In the field of blood glucose measuring equipment business, Bayer's market share ranks third in the world. Panasonic Health Care will expand its overseas sales through acquisitions.

The sales of Bayer's blood glucose meter business reached more than 120 billion yen in 2014. It is expected to complete the acquisition by the end of March 2016. Panasonic Health Care has previously provided blood glucose meters to Bayer with OEM production. Including OEM, the share of Panasonic's related equipment is 50% in Japan and 20% in the world.

In addition to the blood glucose measurement value, Panasonic Health Care is also involved in medicinal refrigerators and electronic cases. Matsushita, the parent company, has sold its stake to the US investment fund Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), which currently owns 80% of Panasonic Health Care.
