According to foreign media reports, conditions such as oral lichen planus (OLP) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) can cause pain in the mouth, which may be difficult to treat. However, due to the advent of a bandage capable of delivering drugs, there may be new hopes for treating these conditions, which bandages may substantially adhere directly to these wounds.
In general, OLP, AS, and other diseases that cause oral damage are treated with steroid creams, ointments, or mouthwashes. These problems are that, once applied, they are quickly spread throughout the mouth, limiting their contact time with the target area. Therefore, their treatment may not be as significant.
With this in mind, scientists at the University of Sheffield in the UK collaborated with researchers at Dermtreat A / S in Denmark to create a Rivelin patch. It is made of electrospun polymer nanofibers, infused with the steroid clobetasol-17-propionate, which has a non-toxic bioadhesive on one side and a water-impermeable backing layer on the other side. This allows it to remain stuck in the wet part of the patient's mouth, continuously releasing steroids directly into the underlying lesions, but not into the rest of the mouth.
In a laboratory test of 26 test subjects, it lasted for two hours - much longer than the duration of the ointment.
Dr. Craig Murdoch, lead author of the study, said: "The effect of the patch is similar to that of the oral cavity, which means it is very effective for specific areas and for the formation of protective barriers. Patients who have tested this patch have found it useful. Very comfortable, they are very satisfied with the length of the patch, which makes it particularly effective and efficient."
Rivelin patches will soon enter clinical trials in several locations in the UK and the US.
