A new study by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom shows that drinking artificially prepared soft drinks or sugary milk drinks instead of water or sugar-free tea or coffee will help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Soft drinks are artificially prepared beverages that contain almost no alcohol. From the type of soft drink, the vast majority contain sugar.
A report issued by the University of Cambridge on the 1st indicated that many years ago British researchers began a large-scale sample survey. A total of more than 25,000 volunteers participated in the survey and they were between 40 and 79 years old. During the 11-year follow-up survey, volunteers recorded their dietary rules daily, especially sugar intake. At the end of the survey, 847 volunteers were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Through data analysis and extrapolation, the researchers found that if volunteers replace their daily soft drinks with water, sugar-free tea or coffee, their risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be reduced by 14%. If these sugar-free drinks are used instead of the daily sugar-sweetened milk drinks, these volunteers can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 20% to 25%.
The researchers said that the results of this study are basically in line with the findings of a similar study published earlier, which also provides a fuller basis for the World Health Organization's proposal to limit intake of sugar in the diet. The results of this study at Cambridge University have previously been published in the German Journal of Diabetes.
