Many plants determine the flowering period by sensing changes in the length of the sun. The research team led by Professor Adachi Araki of Kyoto University in Japan discovered a new protein that plays an important role in flowering of plants. The new protein is called FD protein and the findings were published in the latest issue of the American Journal of Science. Araki et al. previously found that there is a protein called FT in the plant leaves. When the sunshine is longer, the FT protein will “push†the plant to flower. The newly discovered FD protein is present in plantlets and can be combined with FT proteins transferred from plant leaves to control the flower bud development. In addition, the FD protein is essential for the function of the FT protein, and if there is no FD protein, flowers will not bloom even if the FT protein increases. The researchers said that if you can figure out how FT proteins are transferred from leaves to young shoots, you can finally understand the mechanism of flower bud formation and flowering.
