Nicholas Crawford and Salad Tishkov of the University of Pennsylvania recruited about 1,500 ethnic and genetically diverse volunteers in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Botswana to conduct research and volunteers to provide DNA samples and measure their skin pigmentation. .
The combined data allows the team to find eight sites in the human genome that are highly correlated with skin pigmentation levels, which account for 30% of the overall genetic changes in volunteer skin pigmentation. There is a genetic variation associated with lighter skin at each of the variant sites. Seven lighter-skinned genetic variants appeared at least 270,000 years ago, with four variants appearing 900,000 years ago.
