Recently, researchers at Harvard Medical School in the United States have discovered a protein called beta-2 microglobulin in the blood that predicts the risk of stroke in women.
The researchers analyzed blood from 946 women, including 473 healthy women, and 473 women who developed ischemic stroke within 9 years. The results showed that the β2-microglobulin in the blood of healthy women was significantly lower than that of women who had a stroke, and in the healthy women group, the risk of stroke was increased by 52% in women with high β-2 microglobulin.
The study, published in the Journal of Neurology, said that although the current results indicate that the protein is a potential marker for predicting stroke, further trials are needed to prove it.
