The port of Hong Kong confirmed the third case of human infection with the H7N9 avian influenza virus on the 5th after entering the winter. The patient was a 62-year-old man with a long-term illness. The man was confirmed dead on the morning of the 6th.
The patient left Hong Kong on December 15 last year and went to Zengcheng, Guangzhou. From January 1 this year, he developed fever, cough, and dyspnea. The patient was admitted to a hospital in Dongguan from January 2 to 3, discharged from the hospital on the 3rd and returned to Hong Kong on the same day. On the 4th, he went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Hong Kong Yanji Hospital to seek medical treatment and was admitted to hospital the same day. On the 5th, the patient’s condition deteriorated and he was sent to the intensive care unit for further treatment. At about 4 a.m. on the 6th, he was certified dead.
The patient's trachea secretion samples and nasopharyngeal secretion samples were tested positive by the Public Health Laboratory Service of the Centre for Health Protection and confirmed on the evening of the 5th that they were positive for the Influenza A H7N9 virus. The patient reported that he had not contacted the bird recently and had not visited the market.
His close contacts have not been diagnosed so far and are under medical supervision. A spokesman for the CHP said that the case has been reported to related departments in Guangdong and Macau and is currently contacting the Mainland to follow up the history and activities of the patient during their stay in the Mainland. Based on the information available so far, the case was classified as imported.
Hong Kong was the first person infected with the H7N9 strain of bird flu since its last winter on December 19 last year. A 75-year-old man who once visited Dongguan proved to be positive for the H7N9 virus after he returned to Hong Kong. He had purchased it at the Sugon One Market in Changping, Dongguan. The birds were slaughtered and stayed in the hospital until December 25 last year. On December 29th the same year, Hong Kong confirmed the second human case of bird flu H7N9, and a 70-year-old man traveled to Shenzhen and Zhongshan for medical treatment.
