Recently, Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University completed the first demonstration of the first WATCHMAN left atrial appendage system in China. The director of the Department of Cardiology and Academician Ge Junbo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that the emergence and application of the left atrial appendage device provided innovative medical technology for clinicians to reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation.
Academician Ge Junbo said that stroke is a disease that makes cardiologists "irritated" because it involves anticoagulant therapy and heart rhythm control. Atrial fibrillation is the most common persistent arrhythmia. The number of patients with atrial fibrillation in the world is about 33.5 million, of which 8 million are in China. Atrial fibrillation patients are five times more likely to have a stroke than normal people, and strokes caused by atrial fibrillation are usually more severe, have higher mortality, and are more likely to relapse. In non-valvular atrial fibrillation, more than 90% of thrombosis is associated with the left atrial appendage. In the onset of atrial fibrillation, the stagnant blood in the left atrial appendage is prone to thrombosis or blood clots, and the blood clots entering the cerebral blood vessels increase the risk of stroke.
Academician Ge Junbo told reporters that the implantation process of the left atrial appendage device is similar to angioplasty. The doctor introduces the instrument through the catheter, inserts the catheter into the heart from the thigh, and photographs the heart after confirming that the catheter is in the correct position of the heart. Left atrial appendage. This measurement determines the size of the left atrial appendage device used by the doctor. The doctor then proceeds to take measurements and take pictures to confirm that the instrument is in the correct position. Once the position is confirmed, the doctor will release the instrument and implant the instrument into the heart to block the left atrial appendage.
Academician Ge Junbo said that the PROTECT-AF9 trial of the WATCHMAN left atrial appendage closure system showed that compared with warfarin, implantation of the system reduced stroke by 40% to stroke, systemic embolism, cardiovascular or unexplained death. The incidence of compound events reduced all-cause mortality by 34% and cardiovascular mortality by 60%. At the same time, patients with atrial fibrillation who had contraindications to oral anticoagulant therapy had a 77% reduction in stroke risk after implantation.
